An A (Address) record links a domain to an IPv4 address. It's the most basic record: it says which server hosts the domain. The AAAA record does the same but for IPv6 addresses.
The MX (Mail Exchange) record specifies which servers receive a domain's email. Each MX has a priority: the lowest number is tried first.
TXT records store free-form text and are mostly used for domain ownership verification and email security: SPF, DKIM and DMARC are all published as TXT records.
An A record points directly to an IP, while a CNAME (alias) points to another domain name. CNAME is useful so several subdomains automatically follow a shared target.
