CleanBrowsing offers three free filters on different addresses. The Family filter (185.228.168.168 and 185.228.169.168) is the strictest: it blocks adult content, proxies and VPNs, mixed-content sites where forums and adult material coexist, and forces safe search on Google and Bing plus YouTube's restricted mode. The Adult filter (185.228.168.10 and 185.228.169.11) blocks adult content and proxies and forces safe search on Google and Bing, but leaves YouTube unrestricted. The Security filter (185.228.168.9 and 185.228.169.9) only blocks malware and phishing, with no content filtering.

It keeps no query logs, supports DoH and DoT and validates DNSSEC. It operates from the United States. In our measurement from Madrid it was in the leading group: 19 ms cached, 44 ms cold and no dropped queries. A family filter does not have to be slow.

Not the option if you want ad blocking (it doesn't; AdGuard or DNS4EU's ad-free variants do), nor if you need schedules, per-device exceptions or your own lists, which are on the paid plans. The Family filter can also block legitimate mixed-content sites, so in a home with teenagers try the Adult filter first. For a home router with young children, the Family filter is about as complete as it gets without paying or configuring anything.
